Barnette weaves a cohesive and believable story with compelling characters. The plot truly hangs together: it is not merely an excuse to have the characters have sex. And when the sex does happen, Barnette's style will make your pulse pound and your spine tingle. The dialogue is not cheesey and the descriptions of the things the characters do to each other are not awkward. Instead, you are drawn into the sexual experience with the characters. Another good victorian romance from the author of some of my favorites of the genre. Abigail Barnette always writes stories that feel grounded in a place and time, but manage to make the modern and refreshing themes of consent, equality and respect fit seamlessly into the narrative. However, I couldn't give the full five stars because this edition is plagued with typos and grammatical errors (not including the intentionally simplistic way she writes the sign language conversations). There was an especially egregious typo where Barnette even misspells the heroine's name. The frequent misspellings feel like eating a delicious meal but then suddenly biting into a bit of grit or eggshell. It pulls you out of the moment and makes it hard to really immerse yourself in the story. If you can overlook these frequent errors it's a very enjoyable book. If you know typos on every page will irritate you, wait for a revision by a sharper-eyed editor.
