In the tradition of WATERSHIP DOWN, ANIMAL FARM and THE CALL OF THE WILD, Gus Flory's THE SHEEPLE is an epic tale of adventure sure to capture the imagination of the young and not so young alike. THE SHEEPLE is about a sheep named Bucky who escapes from his flock — an allegory about life in our times, the choice between freedom versus safety, and truth versus the lies we're told.
Bucky is smarter than the average sheep. He is destined to become leader of his flock, which lives peacefully on the idyllic hills of California's Central Coast.
When Bucky learns an awful secret, he attempts to warn the flock of the true intentions of the shepherd and the dog who watch over them. But the sheep think and speak in simple sheepisms and are unable to accept or believe what he has to tell them.
One old ram, a black sheep, believes him. He tells young Bucky of a mythical ram named Zeus and his wild sheep who live in freedom on Liberty Mountain. The two sheep must decide whether to remain with the flock or escape. The decision is made and they set out into the wild in search of Zeus and his flock. A harrowing odyssey ensues.

I wasn`t exactly sure what I was getting myself into when I chose this story, but when reading the previews I immediately thought of "Watership Down" which I read about 50 years ago. Never forgot it, loved every moment I spent reading it. So that was partly why I chose this story. I`m glad I did. This is a beautifully written story about one adventurous ram lamb who feels the need to strike out, leave the flock and with an elderly ram friend as his sidekick they go in search of freedom. There is danger all about them, but they press on.
I was terrified how this story might end, and although there were mishaps and suffering, the writer gave us a lovely ending. Everything is not perfect, but as close to it as it could be. Do I recommend it? Most definitely!

The Sheeple Gus Flory 9781544878447 Books Reviews
Definitely makes you wonder if we too are sheeple.
This is a cute review of this Author`s best to come! I really liked it. Best to come. I think this author has promising books to come.
This is an amazing book and the sheep's personalities remind me of people I know. I liked the lessons on leadership that can be found in the story. The most important lesson is to know the facts about a situation, recognize the danger to yourself and others, and then sound a warning. If you can save one or two people the effort one puts into the warning is worth the risk. If you sound a warning, show people the way, and no one else follows one has accomplished their due diligence.
This was an amazing story. Imagine! Following the sheep as they went about their daily business. Finding out some sheep are smarter than others. How they think, and what they feel. It's a story of friendship, love and perseverance. It was so real, I surprised myself when it was over, and I realized I'd been reading about sheep. Just...wow.
I truly enjoyed this book, it has a lot of heart. I enjoyed reading this book from the beginning til the end... Yes it was about sheep but it was written in a way that was amazing and very readable. I didn't want to put it down. Give it a read.
On the order of Watership Down. I think this would be a good book club book. Is it better to be free with some risk or secure with known risk.
Those who say it’s a kids story because it’s about animals, have you ever read Animal Farm?
For the love of God, it's CONCRETE... "cement" is the powder that glues the concrete together. And, using a shotgun to butcher would make a horrible mess of things... -)
But completely enjoyable, loved the characters... and their names, couldn't wait to see what Bucky would do next.
Didn't have to get lost in the possible metaphors... just a good hero odyssey.
Also interesting to me, having motorcycled Nacimiento-Furguson Road, near Big Sur, many times, my bet, Bucky lived somewhere between Fort Hunter Liggett Military Base and Cal Hwy 1; and "Liberty Mountain" might be a nearby, well known peak in the area, overlooking the Pacific.
Good read, Gus!!
