A deadly, alluring stranger. The consequences of loving a doomed immortal. The steamy hot, heart-wrenchingly emotional, edge-of-your-seat first Vesper novella Gilded Destiny is dark fantasy romance like you've never seen it before.

A woman's memory returns when she falls in love with the monster who took it from her.

Calli tattoos her skin to fill the holes in her memory, thanks to an accident that left her mind damaged and empty. But a nasty encounter with a fired employee leaves her in the arms of her unlikely savior Nycholas, a predatory, serpentine Vesper on the run from his brutal master.

Nycholas’ clandestine world holds the secrets to mankind’s origin and survival… but he only wants one thing before his time is up a few colorful nights with Calli, the fragile, tattooed, human woman he pursued and saved.

The more Calli learns about Nycholas, the more her own darkened memories return to her. Despite her haunted past, she loses herself to passion and desire with her immortal captor.

Now, Calli must overcome the demons of her past, or allow Nycholas to kiss her memories away and spare her the trauma of loving a doomed immortal. But each choice comes with dire consequences – some that endanger not only herself, but her family as well.

Gilded Destiny Paranormal Dark Fantasy Romance Vesper Book 1 eBook Nola Sarina

here do I start? Gilded Destiny, by Nola Sarina is unlike any romance novel I’ve read, though I suppose it could also be classified as Urban Fantasy. Either way, it’s an interesting book with a heated romance, vampires, danger, and love that surpasses memory and obligation.

Callie is a tattoo artist with a short-term memory problem after an accident five years ago left her with apparent brain damage. She also doesn’t remember what happened to her the year she was gone before that. When Nycholas walks into her tattoo parlor, her life changes as she finds herself attracted to this unhuman, gorgeous being.

Nycholas is something else. Half human, half snake, his race of Vespers are humanities’ vampires, though we’ve got it all wrong. Born of the Garden of Eden, Vespers roam the Earth, mysteriously protecting humanity while also feeding off of it. But Nycholas hasn’t forgotten his human side, nor his desire for love. When he walks into Callie’s shop, he sees something he wants though he knows it will probably be the death of him.

Sarina is a very talented writer. Her words flow across the pages of Gilded Destiny like a slow coursing river, washing over you, filling your senses. I loved her imagery. She does a fantastic job of world building as well, creating the Vespers and their mythology and making complete sense of it, though Gilded Destiny, the first of the Vesper series, doesn’t spill all their secrets. She easily maps out the relationships between Nycholas and Callie and those between Nycholas and his brethren. The reader feels the evil that pours from Levitiqas, the ageless leader of the Vespers, we feel the pull of Nycholas’s brothers, Levi and Festus, who would rather bring him back to the fold than kill him. And Sarina takes risks. The telling of Callie and Nycholas’s story is not for the faint of heart. Murder and heartbreak abound in this short book (only 154 pages), but there’s love as well.

For me, the love story wasn’t quite strong enough to make up for the violence. I didn’t feel Callie and Nycholas’s love as strongly as I wanted to. They fall into bed rather quickly and Callie has to accept a whole lot of crazy before that happens. And it happens quickly. Honestly, that’s the only thing that keeps this from being a 5 star book. But, Gilded Destiny is realistic at the heart of its story (obviously, the vampire bit isn’t, but hey, it’s paranormal) sets up the Vesper series in a dynamic way, so I don’t mind and I’m anxious for the next installment. Heat level: 2.0

Gilded Destiny Paranormal Dark Fantasy Romance Vesper Book 1 eBook Nola Sarina Reviews

I am having a difficult time figuring out how to write this review. I didn't care for the book but I have a feeling that it came down to personal preferences rather than the quality of the writing. Nola Sarina is clearly a talented writer who has a knack for hammering out a complex plot despite the limitations of a novella length story.

I liked the concept of vespers and I appreciated the depth of the vesper world and all the characters Sarina created. Our antihero, Nycholas, is half human, half snake, and is pretty dang gross. He bites people, causing them to shrivel up and dehydrate, and then Nycholas unhinges his jaw and stuffs the poor victims down his throat. Not even kidding. I love bad boys, but Nycholas' habit of eating innocent people (his first kill, a crime of passion, notwithstanding) was kind of a turn-off. Also disconcerting were Nycholas' weird speech patterns. Sometimes he talked like he was a 5-year-old. As the story progressed, his speech seemed to improve, which was a plus.

The romance in this novella was spot-on. The heroine, Calli, isn't some ruthless mercenary or anyone you'd expect to kick butt. She's just a normal girl who happened to fall in love with a demon. Her choices and narration are realistic and believable without being annoying. I never stopped to question any of Calli's actions because Sarina's expert storytelling made every development seem natural and expected.

The ending was what ultimately made me decide to give three stars instead of four. I'm not one for hopeless endings, and again, that could come down to personal preference. There were four deaths- one explicit, two that happen without witness, and one that is only implied- at the end of the book that felt like a real kick to the gut. It felt like there was no pay-off for the hope and affection we'd experienced through the rest of the book. I would probably have purchased the next book in the series if I thought it would be a continuation of this story, but it looks like Sarina is moving to other characters within the vesper world so I'll have to think on it.
I've read many paranormals, but lately they've all been palatable like hospital herbal tea. But Sarina's daring approach to her novella quickly made GILDED DESTINY my favorite new flavor of addicting black tea.

I found myself lost in the unique darkness of this paranormal novella. Sarina unveils rich layers that surprised and terrified me. The tie in of the serpantile Vesper to the Garden of Eden and the terror of the Vesper community demands contemplation. The thoughts creep up on me when my door rattles, I smell something "off", or I'm walking alone in the park.

Sarina creates a beautiful darkness with rich descriptions that pull you into the emotion and sensation of Calli and Nycholas. You feel their terror, passion, love and despair through her delicate word choice and sensual style.

Sarina gives the reader an unexpected turn in her novella, non-traditionally introducing a main character late in the story, woven into the darkness of Calli and Nycholas's tragedy. As only a brilliant writer could do, Sarina pulls off her daring move-- the surprise character has great depth, strength and power. Sarina's courage to try something new undoubtedly created an addictive series of beauty, darkness, and power.

For readers who are bored of the traditional adult paranormal, I recommend diving into GILDED DESTINY. Just be fair warned, you won't be able to escape.
