What is the worth of your spirit?

In the world of Awya, where life is scattered across isles in a seemingly endless ocean of black liquid, the Isle of Winder is home to uymns whose primary trade is agriculture and flower cultivation. Here, an umyn boy by the name of Amory Demshen becomes obsessed with Tempertime Cemetery—a collection of portals powered by spirits that link the isles of Awya together, and a place forbidden to those without proper training and knowledge.

Amory disobeys the laws and his mother, sacrificing the qualities of youth and the virtues of his upbringing to pursue a selfish adventure connived by a hidden, sinister force. Unnerving truths and perilous consequences await as Amory—equipped with an authoritative jar, a chest of bewitching cards, and a flying stone slab—plunges into the darkness of the spirit collectors.

Will Amory learn the worth of a spirit in time to save his own?

The Spirit Collectors Thralldoms Book 1 A Dark Fantasy Novel eBook M Amanuensis Sharkchild

May contain some elements of a spoiler…sort of.
The Spirit Collectors was a very interesting read. Amory is a youth that wants more out of life. So much so, that he goes against the laws of his island home and visits Tempertime Cemetary before he’s learned enough to deal with the magic that resides there. Amory goes on an adventure. I’m not saying it’s a happy adventure, but it is eventful.
This book is well written and has a lot of descriptive prose. Normally I am not into that sort of writing. I find I usually skim over it. But, in all but a very few instances, the author keeps me interested enough in the descriptive writing that I don’t skim as normal.
I felt bad for the main character and was appalled by how he is used. But I think that adds to the mystery that you are left with at the end of the book.
Not a long book, it’s a quick read and very entertaining. I’d recommend this book to anyone that enjoys books with a magical element, as well as a subject matter that turns sort of dark. This is good fantasy.

The Spirit Collectors Thralldoms Book 1 A Dark Fantasy Novel eBook M Amanuensis Sharkchild Reviews

First off I'd like to discuss the beautiful design of the book itself. The dust jacket and boards are an amazing sight of craftsmanship and design. The dust jacket is translucent with a fabulous design on it of all the denizens of this world you'll meet, and the front and back boards have a corresponding design that shows through the dust jacket. You really feel like you are holding a groovy book in your hands, and that is just on the tangible level. I also must add a note to the wonderful interior illustrations at the beginning of each chapter- the design is just wonderful and the art is amazing. Thankfully what's inside is as uber groovy as one could hope for in a new fantasy book that sets up a series called Thralldoms. Going into the reading I knew I'd be reading all about the adventures of one young umyn named Amory Demshen from a world known as Awya- a world of islands scattered on a black sea connected by magic portals, for the weird black liquid sea can not be navigated.

The book begins with young Amory becoming obsessed with these portals on his home on the Isle of Winder. One must past rigid tests to be allowed to use the portals, but Amory will not be stopped- his selfishness drives him unrelenting on a crazed adventure which all begins in a strange cemetery at night. One night while trespassing in the cemetery he meets a strange creature that calls itself a guardian of the gates. Thus the doors to other worlds are opened to our hero. He eventually teams up with a sentient soul jar, finds a chest of magic cards, and travels around on a flying stone slab. As Amory gives more of his life over to magic he becomes one of the titular spirit collectors- the novel traverses some truly dark fantasy of a first rate variety. Amory risks his own soul on his mad adventure through the dark under belly of Amya. I really don't want to give more than that away, but it is a fantastical and dark adventure ride- buy this ticket you will be glad you did.

It was simply a book that once I picked it up- I could not put it down- I read it straight through in one solid sitting. The book sets up an amazing world, with amazing characters, and it totally leaves you wanting more- which is a good sign for a first book in a series. I know I will definitively be picking up Book Two of the Thralldoms by M. Amanuensis Sharkchild. I want to explore more of this world with a truly gifted author at the helm.
Great book. Original and entertaining as all books by Sharkchild are. Get your copy.
While I loved this book, I am glad to have read it on the kindle cloud reader. If not for that, much of the description would have escaped me, for Sharkchild seems to enjoy a dictionary's more lengthy boons.

I read this book in two sittings. The first was 10% and the rest in one go, today. It was amazing, even though it starts slow and too vague to be intriguing. I particularly enjoyed the restless resentment within our main character. It lent a real depth to his anger which transcended the usuals pitfalls of angsty teens. amazing book
The Spirit Collectors book one is a great start to what is going to be a fabulous YA series of fantasy books.

The story is about a boy named Amory, who lives on a island that is surrounded by black inky water. The water is dangerous and travel is only conducted by portals in the local cemetery. Amory and the rest of the island inhabitants grow flowers and other plants to trade with other islands for essentials items and food to live on.

The cemeteries are dangerous places and only trained shamen like people can use the portals properly.

Amroy how ever, cannot resist the temptation to explore and trying to learn the secrets of the portals at the cemeteries and gets caught. He faces some harsh consequences and even worse, the loss of trust from his mother.

But Amory cannot stop his obsession with the portal and that leads for a faithful decision that will impact him forever.

I m not going to go much more into the story in this review, because discovering that part of Amory;s journey is the best part of this book.

I like just about everything this book has. The Spirit collectors has a very original fantasy setting. The Black inky waters that surround the island are menacing and add a great touch of isolation to Amory’s situation. The scary cemeteries that the portals are located at also add a great touch of supernatural menace, but also are compelling as well.

The Illustrations to the book are well done, and add a nice touch to the prose. The hard back has a nice faux leather bound cover, which gives the feeling of a magical tome when reading the book.

I did also get a copy of the edition of this book. Its well formatted and read quite well on my phone and my tablet. At 5 dollars, that is a steal.

I am really looking forward to more in this series. While being sold as a YA adventure book, readers of all ages will enjoy this series.
