Author D. W. Anderson knows there's a gap between reality and his perception; he just forgets. So sometimes he jumps trampoline nets for cash, catches "the AIDS," and collects underage drinking tickets. You've been there building Slip 'N Slides in the high school showers; being suspended for accidentally mooning the student teacher; telling your third-grade teacher to "Suck it"; announcing a "shit-off" between friends; and witnessing the slow death of a loved one.Take a break from Twittergramming and drunk shopping. Sit back and laugh with (or at) a guy who always misses that last step down the stairs.

Mind the Gap is honestly funny. In other words, Anderson shows us stories with humor that comes from his candor. For the sake of our amusement he tells us his true stories along with short stories that seem to be based on real life. Either way, the stories he writes are engaging and polished.Anderson gives us an abundant amount of funny, but he dalso adds to it. Reveals angst behind the zany stunts he has pulled. In his way he makes sure his stories have substance- what we need.
He gets a lot of americana in his stories with his choice of details. In the way that John Updike did. Anyone growing up in the 2000s (really?) will relate to these stories. A culture of clam shell cell phones and playstation 2. However, I did not grow up in the 2000s and there was still a lot for me to identify with. No not getting in trouble with the law or Anderson’s family dynamics. But I identified with not quite fitting in anywhere and with being fascinated with my family’s dynamics.
Each time I thought I got a handle on Anderson’s story and settled in to enjoy the ride, Anderson shifted into a higher gear.

Mind the Gap True Tales of Confusion D W Anderson 9781533495808 Books Reviews
A balance of funny, immature, and not-quite maudlin. Highlights A Saturday, Playing Guns. A Fatham Below & Miles Above. In the woods. I enjoyed that I could jump around, but there was still a connected part of it. I'd suggest reading it in order.
A clever and entertaining collection of stories/essays to make you laugh (or sometimes cringe). Anderson has a unique voice that's edgy, yet soft in all the right places - definitely an author to watch.
OMG This book is hilarious. One of those authors with a truly unique voice. Anyone who has attended school or life will laugh out loud.
Mind the Gap by D.W. Anderson
If you ever find yourself sentenced to a two thousand mile long bus ride across Siberia, the person you should fight to share a seat with is D.W. Anderson, who is possibly--with the exception of the Zoomba-ing cat on You Tube--the funniest person in the world.Anderson’s new book, Mind the Gap True Tales of Confusion, is a collection of twenty-eight mostly autobiographical narratives, essays, and short stories that really ought to be titled Dumb Stuff Guys Do. The vignettes are as addictive as cheese popcorn. I’ll only read one more, Ilie to myself, because I do, after all, have to get up in the morning, but then the title of the next piece will prove so intriguing--Manly Manitives, Sucker Punch, DJ-jing a Wedding-- that I have no choice but to go on, wondering what fresh mayhem will unfold. Gnome-kidnapping? It’s there. The dirtiest quote in the Bible--who knew? Naked soapy slip’n’slides in high school lockerrooms, underage drinking at Wisconsin Dells--check, check, double-check. The dialogue is laugh-aloud funny, the descriptions are sharp, and the observations perfectly capture the adolescent male mindset getting a laugh is more important than getting a good grade. One of the best stories is Clueless--set, I think, in the early 1990s--in which the sexually confused twelve-year-old narrator is terrified he has gotten The AIDs from kissing his girlfriend. but nevertheless feels somewhat comforted by the fact that he and Magic Johnson now have something in common. Information on human sexuality being virtually non-existent at the boy’s Christian school--because that isn’t something nice people talk about--he has to muddle through his confusion with the non-helpful information of equally baffled classmates. Wry and painfully honest, Clueless is the poster child for coming of age stories. Imagine Catcher in the Rye as narrated by David Sedaris.
Excellent book, very funny
Funniest book I've read . . . Ever. I haven't read in years and this collection got me back into it. Great description and brief stories. Fits perfectly next to my toilet or on my coffee table when I want to be fancy.
The creative style and balance of seriousness and humor really keeps the reader interested throughout. The author takes some risks i.e. gender swap writing in certain chapters. The colorful language really makes you feel like you're there. It's a hard book to put down.
